FAQ

What should I expect a session with you to be like?

I can give you a little insight into how talk therapy with me could be. Although, with full transparency, every individual counseling session is different.

In a collaborative therapy session, the psychotherapist and person in therapy develop a partnership in which they talk with each other, not to each other. Here's what you can expect:

  • Storytelling and Listening: You can tell your story while I actively listen and seek to understand your perspective.
  • Facilitated Dialogue: To facilitate dialogue, I might ask questions, comment, and make sure I accurately understand what you are saying.
  • Cooperative Relationship: By forming a cooperative relationship, we work together to create a new understanding of your experience, allowing for transformation.
  • Expertise Recognition: A crucial part of collaborative therapy is recognizing that you are the expert on your own experience.

Every session is unique, and our approach will be tailored to your specific needs and goals.

What techniques do you use?

You are the expert here, not me. As a psychotherapist, I do not claim to have greater knowledge or understanding than you. While I can offer suggestions or perspectives during talk therapy, I avoid imposing my ideas on you. I value transparency, so I will share my thoughts and seek direction from you.

As a collaborative therapist, I may use various techniques, including:

  • Storytelling: Inviting you to tell your story in your own way and at your own pace.
  • Active Listening: Listening attentively to your experience and often checking if my interpretation is accurate.
  • Pauses and Silence: Using pauses and silence to create space for reflection.

These techniques help create a supportive and respectful environment where your voice and experience are central.

What structure do you follow?

In the beginning stages, I keep my talk therapy collaborative and flexible.

Together, we will build the structure of our counseling experience, tailoring it to fit our needs. This includes:

  • Frequency and Means of Interactions: Deciding how often we meet and through what means (in-person, virtual, etc.)
  • Utilizing Various Tools: Incorporating different therapeutic tools and techniques as needed.
  • Setting Expectations: Establishing clear expectations for our work together.

If we find our initial setup isn’t effective, we can adjust it. We won’t be confined by a system that doesn’t work for us.

What will we be working on in therapy?

We will work together to set an agenda for our individual counseling sessions. Research shows that co-creating explicit and clear objectives or goals leads to better outcomes in therapy. Here's what you can expect:

  • Goal Setting: We'll collaborate to define your objectives and goals.
  • Personalized Approach: While I have a preferred framework for talk therapy, we can adapt it based on your specific concerns.
  • Flexible Structure: Depending on your needs, we may create a customized approach that works best for you.

Our work will be tailored to your unique situation, ensuring a more effective and personalized therapy experience.

How long will therapy take?

The duration of therapy is hard to predict as no two counseling sessions are ever the same, and the path of growth varies from person to person. Here's what you can expect:

  • Ongoing Reflection: Between sessions, you'll have opportunities to reflect on insights and participate in experiments, strategies, exercises, and practice new skills.
  • Beyond Live Sessions: Our work isn't limited to live sessions; ongoing reflection and practice are key parts of the process.
  • Feedback and Transparency: As your psychotherapist, I value feedback and transparency. I am committed to being transparent with you.
  • Building Trust: While I hope you will become fully transparent with me over time, I can't require it. I will ensure we have time at the end of every session to check in and hear your thoughts about the session.

Therapy is a unique journey, and we will tailor it to your needs and goals.
